The McClintock Family of Trinta and Newtown
The McClintock family originated in Scotland and settled in Ireland during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
They became established at Trinta in County Donegal, where the family formed part of the early plantation settlement, before later extending their connections to Newtown in County Louth.
Through marriage with the Perry family of Mullaghmore, the McClintocks became associated with the Seskinore estate in County Tyrone.
Origins in Scotland and Settlement in Ulster
The McClintock family is of Scottish origin, and is understood to have settled in Ireland between approximately 1597 and 1623, during the period of plantation in Ulster.
Their early Irish seat was at Trinta in County Donegal, where they established themselves as landholders.
Alexander McClintock of Trinta (d. 1670)
Alexander McClintock of Trinta is one of the earliest clearly identified members of the family in Ireland.
He married Agnes Stenson, daughter of Donald Maclean, and died on 6 September 1670.

John McClintock of Trinta married Janet Lowry, daughter of John Lowry of Ahenis and Mary Buchanan.
This marriage formed an early and important connection between the McClintock and Lowry families.

The Newtown Line
From this line descended the McClintocks of Newtown, County Louth.
Alexander McClintock (b. 1746), of Newtown, was a nephew of Alexander McClintock of Drumcar.
In December 1781, he married Mary Perry, daughter of Samuel Perry of Perrymount (Mullaghmore), County Tyrone.
Connection to the Seskinore Estate
Through this marriage, the McClintock family became directly connected with the Perry estate at Mullaghmore.
Their son:
• Samuel McClintock (1790–1852)
later succeeded to the Seskinore estate following the provisions of the will of George Perry.
This transfer marked the transfer of the estate from the Perry family to the McClintock line.
Significance
The McClintock family of Trinta and Newtown represent the origins of the line which later became established at Seskinore.
Their progression from Scotland to Ulster, and subsequently into County Louth, reflects the broader patterns of settlement and movement among landed families in Ireland.
Through marriage with the Perry family, they became the inheritors of the Mullaghmore and Seskinore estates, forming the basis of the later history of the property.
