Overview

The Stewart family of Gortigil, Athenree, Ballygawley and Loughmacrory, County Tyrone, descends from Captain Andrew Stewart, who settled in Ulster during the early seventeenth century and was closely connected to the family of the Barons Castle Stewart.

Through military service, estate ownership, political office, ecclesiastical influence, and advantageous marriage alliances, the family became one of the principal landed dynasties of County Tyrone, culminating in the creation of the:

Baronetcy of Athenree

on 14 June 1803

This register traces the principal male line from the Plantation period to the present day.


I. Captain Andrew Stewart of Gortigil

Captain Andrew Stewart

d. c.1650

Commonly styled:

“Captain Andrew Stewart”

He came from Scotland to Ireland about 1627 with:

Andrew Stewart, 3rd Baron Castle Stewart

to whom he was related.

On his marriage he obtained lands within the manor of Castle Stewart and later established himself at:

Gortigil

near Stewartstown, County Tyrone.

During the rising of 1641, he defended his house for two days against attack before relief arrived from Mountjoy Fort.

He was later killed by rebels about 1650.

He married:

He substantially developed the Stewart estates and rebuilt:

Ballygawley Park

during the early nineteenth century.

He married secondly, in 1837:

Served as Lieutenant in the:

and saw active service during the Crimean War.

He married, on 1 December 1856:

d. 12 October 1913

daughter and coheiress of:

George Powell Houghton

of Kilmannock House, County Wexford.

Sir Hugh died without issue in 1942.
